L.A. Sheriff Alex Villanueva talks about some of the issues facing law enforcement today from homelessness to ICE and media treatment of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department when he sits down with L.A. Weekly publisher Brian Calle, podcast co-host Sara Tariq and L.A. Weekly Editor-In-Chief and Creative Director Darrick Rainey.

The sheriff opens up about the first eight months of his tenure; discussing the removal of ICE from the jails and reactions to some critics comparing him to President Trump.

He also discussed the tenuous relationship between the Sheriff’s Department and the County Board of Supervisors.

Pressed on how national tensions around policing impact the L.A. community opinion of the department, the sheriff explained his perspective on the level of threat L.A. deputies face – even citing the recent shooting involving rapper YG’s vehicle.

With the unconscionable increases in homelessness in L.A., what role does law enforced play in the solution? How do we break the cycle and what are the possible solutions? The sheriff responds to these questions and more.

Tune in to this week’s episode to hear about all of these issues, the state of crime in L.A. and if there are any tricks to get out of a ticket (spoiler: flirting doesn’t work).
