Inside BDH Management’s Appave Syrup and Debra Hairston’s Approach to Reinventing Everyday Sweeteners

Rising awareness around sugar consumption has gradually influenced how consumers evaluate everyday ingredients, particularly those used in beverages and desserts. Within this context, BDH Management has introduced Appave Syrup, a sweetener developed to align with changing expectations around sugar content, calorie intake, and flavor. According to Debra Hairston, owner of BDH Management, the product reflects a response to both personal experience and broader shifts in consumer demand.

Debra explains that the idea emerged from years of exposure to the food and beverage industry through her husband, Burnes Hairston’s background in the space. “We began noticing ongoing conversations around sugar intake and related health concerns, which led us to take a closer look at how traditional sweeteners are used and how they might be approached differently,” Burnes says. She notes that these conversations highlighted a growing interest in alternatives that could reduce sugar intake without compromising taste.

“We created a product that gives people another option,” Debra says. “There has been so much concern around high sugar content, and we wanted to offer something that still enhances flavor while aiming to lower both sugar and calories.”

Appave Syrup is built around agave nectar and apple juice, two ingredients that the founders identify as central to the product’s formulation. She explains that agave was selected in part because of its lower glycemic index compared to traditional sugar, which can influence how quickly blood sugar levels rise. At the same time, she notes that agave on its own can be costly and limited in flavor, which led to the development of a blended formula designed to balance both cost and taste.

From the founders’ perspectives, the distinction becomes clearer when considering the overall nutritional profile of the product. The Hairstons note that the formulation was designed with an emphasis on reducing both sugar and calorie content while maintaining a balanced taste. She explains that this approach was not about removing flavor, but about thoughtfully adjusting how the ingredients come together within the formulation. “The goal was to create something people would actually enjoy using,” she explains. “Taste matters just as much as anything else.”

The Hairstons also note that the formulation has undergone third-party evaluation through Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, where the product’s composition was reviewed for safety and alignment with the stated nutritional profile. According to her, this process provided an additional layer of validation around both the ingredient structure and overall formulation.

Production remains closely tied to its origins. The founders explain how the syrup is manufactured in the United States using ingredients that are readily available, often sourced from local grocery stores. She notes that this accessibility was intentional, allowing the product to remain grounded in familiar components.

That attention to flavor also carries through to how the product evolves over time. The Hairstons note that Appave Syrup gradually develops a more rounded profile as it rests, which she explains as a natural part of the process rather than a change in quality. “The longer it sits, the more the flavor comes through,” she says. “It does not fade in the way; instead, it becomes more balanced over time.”

According to the Hairstons, the product has been used across a range of applications, including teas, desserts, and even ice cream, allowing the company to observe how it performs in different formats.

She explains that the focus has been on understanding how the syrup works across different textures and preparation styles. In her view, this has helped illustrate its ability to adapt smoothly to both simple and more complex recipes.

Looking ahead, the Hairstons indicate that the company’s focus remains on refining the existing product rather than introducing entirely new lines. She explains that the formulation allows for adjustments in flavor, meaning the syrup can be tailored for different uses without altering its core structure.

“The formula is flexible,” she says. “We can adjust certain elements to suit different needs while keeping the foundation the same.”

In a market where ingredient transparency and nutritional awareness continue to shape purchasing decisions, BDH Management’s approach reflects an attempt to balance familiarity with innovation. Through Appave Syrup, The Hairstons present a perspective centered on incremental change, where small adjustments in formulation can influence how everyday products are experienced.
