It’s not outlandish to smoke pot during a workout. Many agree that it helps them with their endurance. Several studies concluded that working out while stoned can be beneficial. How effective is this buff and blaze trend?

Let’s find out.

Weed-While-Working-Out Supporters

Getting high and fit is a new trend that’s growing. An LA-based weed gym (aptly named Stoned+Toned) recently launched in San Francisco and they advocate exercising and getting stoned at the same time. Unsurprisingly, it’s not just Stoned+Toned owner Morgan English (and her gym members) who finds marijuana to be a helpful component in their fitnessroutine.

Professional athletes also find pot advantageous to their performance. UFC fighter brothers Nate and Nick Diaz have long been open about their marijuana use. These Stockton, California natives are often seen smoking a joint (and passing it to each other) during press conferences.

Even the most decorated athlete like the 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps was photographed lighting up a bong in the past. Though he’s apologized for his action, we can’t deny that weed didn’t dampen his performance in his career as a competitive swimmer.

Former NBA star J.R. Smith also mentioned in the All the Smoke podcast that he and his fellow NBA players would regularly smoke the herb. He added “You know what’s funny though? That was the only way you could really function in that joint.”

Pros And Cons Of Working Out While Stoned

Working out while stoned may have been crazy back then, but since cannabis’ decriminalization, countless advocates came forward to educate people about its benefits.

Pros

  • Eases inflammation

CBD’s presence in marijuana has anti-inflammatory properties. It can also be used in lotion or tincture forms to apply on sore areas.

  • Improves sleep

A good quality slumber is needed for recovery— and cannabis’ THC induces sleep. It is also helpful for people who suffer from sleep apnea and insomnia.

  • Less anxiety

Athletes or “Stoner-cisers” who plan to compete can benefit from hemp. Weed reduces anxiety and it can help them become more motivated.

  • Lowers blood pressure

The European Journal of Internal Medicine found that cannabis can lower your blood pressure. This can be beneficial if your workout involves a lot of cardiovascular exercises. However, this is disputed; see the “Cons” section below.

Cons

  • Elevated heart rate

Other researchers found that weed can make your heart rate faster. Therefore, smoking weed before or during a workout might keep you from performing up to your peak.

  • Sleepier than usual

Some marijuana strains like OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple, and Blue Dream are high in myrcene. These downer strains can make you feel groggy and you may find it difficult to work out in a way that you normally do.

  • Less focus

Blazing can affect your concentration. All the creative (or crazy) ideas will pop up in your head when you’re high. You may not be able to focus on your exercise.

“Bluntly” Speaking

Weed and working out seems to be the collab we didn’t know we needed. From regular people who wish to get fit to professional athletes, many see and experience the benefits of working out while stoned. However, this activity is not for everyone as it comes with its disadvantages. If you wish to try this new trend, make sure you get your strain from a trustworthy and legitimate cannabis dispensary.
