25-Year-Old Driver Pronounced Dead after Three-Vehicle Crash near Mile Marker 48

LUBBOCK, TX (May 8, 2024)Evelyn Merced-Rojas was killed early Friday morning in a head-on crash at the 1100 block of Interstate 27.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m., near mile marker 48 on April 12th.

According to reports, Merced-Rojas was driving a Ford EcoSport in the wrong direction, heading south in the northbound lanes. This resulted in a collision with a Chevrolet pickup-truck, driven by 25-year-old Deja Sade Garcia, with 25-year-old Jared Jeffrey Smith as the passenger, in a head-on impact.

The force of the collision also affected another vehicle, driven by Edwin Antonio Argueta. Emergency responders transported Garcia and Smith to University Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment, while Argueta was taken to Covenant Hospital in Plainview.

Due to the severity of injuries sustained, Merced-Rojas was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Currently, an active investigation is underway to gather more information about the incident.

The family of Merced-Rojas posted a GoFundMe page to help with costs during this difficult time.
