Let's just skip over today and head straight for the night of Tuesday, April 3. City Tavern, which we called one of L.A.'s Top 5 new beer bars for 2011, is turning one already. How time flies. For the anniversary celebration, general manager and beer dude Matt Meiers is moving from his usual California craft selection to even more local – greater Los Angeles brewers. Why? Because our local brewers have been killing it.
The anniversary event will start at 7 p.m. and last until closing time. Owners Ken Kaufman and Brian McKeaney, the guys who brought Rush Street to Culver City and Alf to your TV (admit it, you loved Alf), along with owner/partner Dave Northrup, who co-stars as the executive chef at Rush Street, are big on local charity. So the event will serve as a fundraiser for the Culver City Historical Society, the keepers of anything and everything historical about, well, Culver City.
(Has anyone noticed that Culver City calls itself “The City of Culver City”? Are you not either the City of Culver or Culver City? But no. “The City of Culver City” is actually on the wall of their City Hall, or perhaps we should call it their Hall of City Hall. Pardon our rant. Back to more important topics, like beer.)
City Tavern features 22 craft beer taps behind the bar and another nine in the booths where you can pour your own beer. Yes, you read that right. Also featured is outstanding comfort food from the kitchen of Jessica Christensen.
The local brewers on tap include Strand Brewing — you can practically hit Strand with a baseball from City Tavern — as well as Craftsman, Eagle Rock, Golden Road, Smog City, Ladyface, Cismontane, TAPS and Enegren Brewing. Not a beer fan? City Tavern will be serving an anniversary cocktail of Champagne with cherry bitters from 7 to 10 p.m. A full bar and extensive wine menu also are available.
