Chichen Itza, the highly-regarded Mexican restaurant near downtown L.A.'s MacArthur Park that specializes in the food of the Yucatán, is closing as of tomorrow. It's the economics, said chef-owner Gilberto Cetina when reached by phone this afternoon.

“You know, we can't make it. We've been losing money for the last 14 months.” By closing the MacArthur Park restaurant, Cetina can save his other Chichen Itza, the original, smaller location in the Mercado La Paloma near USC. Tonight's last supper will be a party, from 6 to 8 p.m., after which we will all have to head a few miles further south-east to eat Cetina's phenomenal cochinita pibil. (There will not be regular dinner service.) “Come by,” said Cetina, “We're going to celebrate.”

Chichen Itza: 2501 W. Sixth St., Los Angeles; (213) 380-0051.
