The sports technology market is booming. The global fitness and recreational sports centers market reached a valuation of $148.03 billion in 2025, with projections suggesting acceleration to $324.05 billion by 2035, representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 8.15%. North America alone accounted for over 38% of global revenue in 2025, translating to an estimated $56.84 billion. AI in sports, a narrower but fast-growing segment, is expected to grow from $2.6 billion in 2023 to approximately $36.7 billion by 2033, at a compound annual growth rate of 30.3 percent. Smart stadiums, athlete analytics, fan engagement platforms, and streaming services are attracting massive capital from venture firms and corporate investors alike.

But beneath the headlines about billion-dollar deals and AI-powered coaching tools, there is a category that the industry has almost entirely ignored: recreational sports for everyday adults. Not fans. Not professional athletes. Just ordinary people who want to get on a field after work and play.

It is a staggering blind spot. Sports participation has been trending downward for years, particularly as people age out of structured environments. The Aspen Institute’s State of Play report found that regular team sports participation among youth ages 6 to 17 declined 6% between 2019 and 2022, a loss of 1.2 million regular players. That decline only accelerates after college, when the last remaining infrastructure for organized play disappears entirely. According to theSports and Fitness Industry Association, 62 million adults actively play recreational team sports in the United States today, with approximately 12 million engaging in pickup or drop-in sports on a weekly basis. These are not casual dabblers – internal platform data from emerging sports-tech companies indicates that 68% of weekly players book the exact same time slot every week, treating their recreational game as a non-negotiable anchor in their calendar.

This is the gap that Flickmatch, the startup founded by AI engineer Abhimanyu Chopra, is building for.

Ask any adult who used to play team sports regularly and the story is remarkably consistent. After university, the infrastructure vanishes. There are no teams, no schedules, no one organizing games. What replaces it is a patchwork of WhatsApp groups and informal networks that depend entirely on one person willing to do unpaid coordination work.

That person, the host, takes on a surprisingly demanding role. They poll the group for availability, reserve a field, collect payments, manage cancellations, and adjust plans when people inevitably drop out at the last minute. According to Chopra, the average organizer dedicates close to two hours of unpaid effort per session just on logistics. The breakdown is punishing: approximately 20 minutes searching fragmented WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages to secure enough interested players, another 20 minutes manually calling or messaging venues to check availability and negotiate reservations, 30 minutes chasing individuals for micro-payments across Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle while personally absorbing the financial risk of no-shows, 20 minutes sending logistical reminders as game day approaches, and a final 30 minutes scrambling to fill spots due to last-minute cancellations. The industry has a name for this: the Coordination Tax. It is thankless work with a predictable ending: the organizer gets tired of it, the group falls apart, and another set of adults quietly stops playing. Research indicates that 80% of volunteer organizers burn out and quit after hosting for just a few months. When the supply of organizers collapses, the supply of games collapses with them, leaving millions of willing players stranded.

In the United States, the friction compounds further. Each city has its own system for field reservations, often requiring insurance, separate payment portals, and varying availability windows. The fragmentation is severe enough that it functions as a genuine barrier to participation. And when the host eventually stops, the group typically dies with them.

This is not a niche problem. It affects every adult who played sports in school and gradually stopped, not because they lost interest, but because the organizational burden became too high. The scale of this unmet need is formally recognised in academic literature as “latent demand” – the unfulfilled desire from individuals who wish to participate but are prevented by structural, logistical, or facility-based barriers. Research from the Tennis Industry Association alone has identified over 16 million Americans expressing latent demand to play just a single sport, sidelined entirely by logistical friction. In cities where streamlined sports-tech platforms have not yet scaled, waitlists of over 200 players routinely form for single locations. The market is enormous, but it has been invisible to most technology investors because it does not fit neatly into existing categories like fan tech or athlete performance.

Why Flickmatch Is Different from Everything Else in the Market

There are companies operating in the recreational sports space. Some run corporate leagues. Others organize pickup games in major cities. But they all share one fundamental constraint: they rely on human coordinators to manage operations. Every new city means hiring more people. Every new sport means more staff. Growth is linear, expensive, and slow.

“The demand has never been the issue,” says Chopra. “People want to play. They have always wanted to play. The problem was always operational. If you solve coordination, you unlock a market that has been sitting there for decades.”

The Mind Behind the Machine

Flickmatch’s AI-first approach is not accidental. It is a direct reflection of its founder’s career. Chopra is a senior AI engineer who spent over five years at Google, where he deployed machine learning systems across search, conversational AI, and e-commerce at a scale that few engineers ever experience. He built systems that served billions of queries, processed millions of web pages, and operated across dozens of languages and markets. He has published research at the IEEE Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision and holds a degree from NSIT, University of Delhi.

What he brought to Flickmatch was not just technical skill but a specific philosophy about how AI should be deployed: not as a flashy feature but as reliable infrastructure that works invisibly, at scale, every single time. The AI agents powering Flickmatch are built with the same engineering discipline that governed production systems at one of the world’s largest technology companies.

He is also, as it happens, someone who captained his university football team, played sports across every city he lived in, and experienced the coordination problem firsthand for years before deciding to solve it.

“I have been on both sides of this,” he says. “I know what it takes to build AI systems that work at scale. And I know what it feels like to spend an hour messaging twenty people just to get a game going on a Tuesday evening. Flickmatch exists because those two parts of my life finally intersected.”

Why Sports Technology is going to be Everywhere

The recreational sports technology space is at an inflection point. The broader sports app market is growing at over 10 per cent annually. AI capabilities have reached a point where natural language coordination is production-ready. And the post-pandemic world has accelerated adult interest in physical activity and community-based recreation. A critical driver of this acceleration is what the U.S. Surgeon General formally declared in 2023: a nationwide loneliness epidemic. By mid-2025, 21% of Americans described themselves as lonely, with rates disproportionately high among young professionals. In response, consumers have begun turning to recreational sports not just for fitness, but as their primary vehicle for social connection. The data reflects this shift starkly: 19% of U.S. adults now play organised team sports, up from just 11% in 2020. Among younger demographics, the intent is even stronger – 47% of Gen Z and 31% of Millennials express active interest in joining recreational leagues.

The companies that have been operating in this space with manual models have already proven that demand exists. Acquisitions are happening. User bases are growing. But the scalability ceiling remains. The first platform to crack AI-powered coordination at scale will have a decisive structural advantage, not just in cost efficiency, but in speed of expansion and depth of user experience. That thesis has now received its clearest institutional validation yet. In June 2025, Volo Sports – backed by $21 million in growth capital from private equity firm Bluestone Equity Partners – acquired its largest direct competitor ZogSports, which brought over 120,000 players and a strong presence in New York and Los Angeles. The deal, valued between $10 million and $20 million, was a watershed moment for the industry: it established a clear precedent for liquidity, proved that technology and operational scale are the ultimate competitive moats, and signalled that private equity now views recreational sports as durable social infrastructure, not discretionary leisure.

Flickmatch’s most ambitious demonstration of that scalability is already in motion. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the platform is building a Fan vs Fan experience designed to bring the world’s biggest sporting event to the streets. The concept is simple but powerful: organize pickup soccer between visiting international fans and locals across all 11 US host cities, with Flickmatch coordinating the entire experience end-to-end, from venue access and team formation to payments and referees.

The idea is not without precedent within Flickmatch’s own ecosystem. The platform has already been running fan club battle games in India, pitting supporters of rival nations and clubs against each other on the pitch – events like Portugal fans vs Argentina fans and Premier League title race battles drawing strong engagement in Gurugram and Hyderabad. These are not gimmicks – they are proof that the coordination infrastructure Flickmatch has built can power entirely new categories of sports experience, not just regular pickup games.

With over 2,000 games hosted, 5,000+ players, and an 81% retention rate, the traction speaks for itself. That 81% retention figure takes on added significance when set against the broader industry benchmark: group and team-based fitness formats retain between 70% and 80% of members annually, compared to approximately 60% for traditional solitary gym memberships. Flickmatch is already outperforming the best-in-class standard for community-driven sports. The World Cup opportunity represents the moment Flickmatch steps from solving a local coordination problem to defining a global one.

Flickmatch is among the first platforms in the recreational sports space to be built AI-native from day one. That head start matters, because in platform markets, the company that solves the coordination layer first tends to define the category.

“Every other category of human activity has been made easier by technology,” Chopra says. “You can order food, book a flight, find a date, all from your phone. But if you want to play football after work, you are still stuck in a group chat hoping enough people show up. We are building the infrastructure to change that, and we are building it with AI at the core so it scales the way technology platforms are supposed to scale.”

The most immediate test of that thesis arrives this June. When fans from 48 nations land across 11 American cities for the FIFA World Cup, most will have no way to play the sport they came to celebrate. Flickmatch is the first platform attempting to change that, one pickup game at a time.
