Last month we received the sad news that the Village Coffee Shop in Beachwood Canyon would be shutting it's doors. But lucky for locals, the former greasy spoon will be getting a bit of a healthy makeover courtesy of Patti Peck, former owner of the Edendale and Millie's Cafe. Peck currently operates her own catering company, and is looking forward to reopening the restaurant in March.

“The menu hasn't changed since 1972, so I think that people will be happy to have a few healthier choices. It'll reflect the updated, freshened way Californians eat,” says Peck. The cafe's name will be changed to Beachwood Cafe, a name that she says locals have been calling the shop for years anyhow.

A vegan herself, Peck says that there'll be a few plant-based options “that don't taste like a punishment” on the menu. She'll also be making granola, jams, jellies, baked goods and ice cream in-house. Some of her Peck's omnivore-friendly dishes include double-crusted chicken pot pie and daily comfort food blue plate specials that weigh in under 500 calories. The freshened up cafe will also be introducing curbside coffee service for locals on the go.

As for the redesign of the interior, Peck will be tapping her friend Barbara Bestor, who was nominated for a James Beard Award for her work on the Culver City Pitfire Pizza. But that doesn't mean things will be getting all fancy and flossy. Peck was responsible for Edendale's revamp from a run-down firehouse into a charming hangout for locals, so she's got a good track record.

“I want to keep the neighborhood vibe,” Peck says. That's something the 'hood can get behind.
