Geng: The success of this film can largely be attributed to my collaborative work with the lead actress, Jesseca. Our creative process involved a significant amount of improvisation and mutual creation, which really brought the character to life. The story revolves around a girl with a rich, imaginative inner world, a theme Jesseca captured with both depth and poignancy. Her performance was not only deeply moving but also crucial in conveying the film’s core narrative and emotional resonance.
Q: You were the recipient of the prestigious Irvin Kershner Award for your work “Illuminating Life.” Could you share the genesis of this noteworthy and captivating project?
Geng: “Illuminating Life” delves into the odyssey of Chinese-American Nobel Laureate Roger Tsien, elucidating his groundbreaking contributions to medical research. The initial impetus emanated from a biologist at UCLA. Captivated by the subject, I delved into extensive research, reaching out to luminaries in the scientific field. The insights gleaned and the narratives uncovered persuaded me of the importance of presenting this story through a documentary. My objective, as the producer, extends beyond showcasing the remarkable contributions of these scientists; it is to inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity, urging young audiences to pursue their aspirations for the betterment of humanity.
