Legendary Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram brought generations of fans together at the Dolby Theatre last Thursday, May 14. It was an iconic venue for the icon, who, for a night, turned Hollywood into a celebration of Arabic pop music and diaspora culture.
The show blended material from her recent album Nancy 11 with the songs that helped define her career over the last two decades. The set moved between newer tracks like “Ya Albo” and “Sidi Ya Sidi” and fan favorites including “Ya Tabtab,” “Betfakar Fi Eih,” “Fi Hagat,” and “Moshtaga Lek.”
Fans sang along word-for-word as Ajram delivered a performance that highlighted her longevity and continued evolution. The concert drew a wide cross-section of attendees from SoCal’s Middle Eastern communities, who treated the evening as both a live music event and a cultural gathering.
Ajram’s songs have soundtracked the lives of fans of all ages, sometimes thousands of miles and decades removed from the release of some of her hits. Her songs are amongst the most likely to get people up and shaking at any Arabic music event, including the many “Habibi parties” across LA. We’ve featured the party “Ya Tab Tab Night,” named after her massive hit, as one of The Best Parties in LA 2024.
We asked Queen Nancy if she was aware of how much her music still resonates in LA. “Honestly, it makes me really happy to know that my music became part of their lives and happy moments,” she said. “And it makes me proud to see them celebrating Arabic music with so much pride wherever they are, sharing it with different cultures and nationalities who are also connecting with it with so much love and energy.
“The fact that my songs are now playing at some of the biggest parties in LA really proves that music is a universal language. Arabic music especially has the ability to reach everyone and go far beyond our region.”
Ajram’s current tour arrives following the release of Nancy 11, an album that expands her signature Arabic pop sound with influences from across the region and contemporary global pop production. More than 25 years into her career, the singer remains one of the defining figures in modern Arabic music, continuing to bridge generations and audiences worldwide.
