M.A.K.E. Out, a new juice and snack bar, is opening today as an extension of Matthew Kenney's raw foods restaurant M.A.K.E. at Santa Monica Place's The Market. With items ranging between $2 and $12, the menu is composed of a seasonal selection of fresh juices and smoothies made from ingredients found at the nearby thrice-a-week Santa Monica Farmers Market.
This will include juices such as Spice-C (orange, pineapple, cilantro and jalapeno) and Carrot Punch (carrots, apple, lemon, ginger, and cayenne); and smoothies such as Blue Bee (blueberries, banana, coconut water, bee pollen, hemp and spirulina). There are also savory snacks in the form of kale chips and house-made crackers, as well as chocolate truffles and macaroons as raw desserts.
In her dining experience at M.A.K.E. last December, our critic Besha Rodell found that Kenney's approach addressed with flair three common questions — taste, satiety and the possibility of making a full meal — one might have about raw food. There were a few caveats, like the disconcerting texture in dishes like the nut cheeses appetizer and the raw food attempt to “imitate off-limits techniques and ingredients.” For the most part, “M.A.K.E. displays the inventive and often delicious potential of raw food.”
The juice and snack bar will open seven days a week at 11 a.m. everyday; closing at 9 p.m. on Sundays through Mondays and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
