Dubai dazzles the world with its soaring skyscrapers, gold-drenched malls, and an appetite for the next big thing. The city’s skyline highlights ambition, where luxury is not just a lifestyle but a language spoken fluently by its residents. Yet, beneath the shimmer of designer storefronts, something new is taking shape—one that challenges the very definition of what it means to own, cherish, and pass on luxury.

Dubai-based entrepreneur Safiya Mehbaliyeva saw an opportunity to redefine what luxury truly means by focusing on luxury with integrity. Her pre-owned luxury platform, Gemaee, is not just another stop on the city’s endless shopping circuit. It is a curated destination where authenticity, transparency, and ethical values are non-negotiables in every transaction.

In an interview with Safiya Mehbaliyeva, she shares her vision for Gemaee and what the platform aims to fill. She also explains why true luxury lies in the stories, provenance, and care behind each piece.

Safiya, what was the status of the luxury and vintage shopping scene in the UAE (or in Dubai) before you started Gemaee?

Answer: Before Gemaee, Dubai’s luxury scene was very much focused on brand-new, flashy purchases, more about status than sustainability. While vintage and resale were gaining popularity in global cities like Tokyo, Paris, or LA, here in the UAE, the pre-owned space was either informal or dominated by platforms that lacked transparency, quality standards, or trust. There was no premium, well-curated, honest platform people could confidently buy or sell through.

What inspired you to believe that luxury should be circular rather than disposable, and how does this philosophy shape Gemaee’s mission?

Answer: Luxury isn’t fast fashion—it’s art, history, and craftsmanship. So why should it be disposable? I was inspired by the Japanese model of care, where pieces are preserved and passed on, not tossed away. This philosophy is at the core of Gemaee. We exist to extend the life of luxury while maintaining high standards, because sustainability and beauty shouldn’t be opposites.

The UAE has a reputation for loving new, flashy luxury. How did you convince customers to embrace the idea of pre-owned designer pieces?

Answer: I didn’t convince them with words—I let the bags do the talking. We showed that pre-owned doesn’t mean second-rate. When clients saw the immaculate condition of our pieces and that they could own rare or discontinued gems for smarter prices, their mindset shifted. Education, trust, and quality changed the narrative.

Why do you think the UAE, despite being fashion-forward, lacked a trustworthy platform for luxury vintage before Gemaee?

Answer: Because fashion-forward doesn’t always mean resale-ready. The UAE was used to boutiques and malls, not peer-to-peer platforms. The few players in the market didn’t invest in trust, authenticity, or presentation. There was a gap between what people wanted and what was being offered. Gemaee filled that gap.

You’ve set a new standard by focusing on “immaculate condition” rather than heavily used items. How do you define and maintain these quality standards?

Answer: “Immaculate” for us means clean corners, fresh interiors, no stickiness, no major scratches, and most importantly, pieces that feel proud to own, not like a compromise. We reject over 70% of what’s offered to us. Every piece goes through a meticulous inspection. If I would not carry it myself, it would not go online.

Walk me through your curation process. What makes a piece worthy of the Gemaee collection?

Answer: It starts with our team evaluating condition, rarity, seasonality, and resale value. But beyond that, we look for pieces that have soul—that bag someone’s been hunting for forever, or that color that’s sold out worldwide. We handpick—not mass-list. Every item should feel like a discovery.

Why was it important for you to focus on ‘quality over quantity’ in the luxury resale market, and how has this set Gemaee apart?

Answer: Because luxury loses meaning when it’s treated like bulk inventory. I’d rather have 30 incredible bags than 300 mediocre ones. Our customers trust us to deliver only the best—no endless scrolling, no guessing games. That precision has built our reputation and customer loyalty.

How do you determine fair, fixed pricing for pieces that vary dramatically in condition and rarity?

Answer: We combine global market research with local demand and condition grading. But we also prioritize fairness for both sellers and buyers. We don’t inflate prices to chase trends, nor do we undervalue rare pieces. Our prices are transparent, justified, and reflective of each bag’s true worth.

Some resale platforms promote luxury bags as investments. You’ve challenged this notion. Why do you think this messaging is problematic?

Answer: It’s misleading and encourages emotional buyers to think of bags like stocks. Not every bag will increase in value, and not every resale is profit-driven. I believe in buying what you love, what you’ll use, and what will last. That’s a healthier, more sustainable way to enjoy luxury.

Beyond selling, you’ve positioned Gemaee as an educator about authenticity. Why did you feel this educational role was necessary?

Answer: Because the number one fear in resale is: Is it real? Most people can’t tell the difference between a fake and a genuine piece anymore—it’s that advanced. So we take the time to teach. Through content, comparison, and transparency, we empower our clients with knowledge, not just a purchase.

What does “Luxury with Integrity” mean to you personally, and how do you instill this value across your team and platform?

Answer: To me, “Luxury with Integrity” means respecting both the item and the client. It means no fake promises, no hidden conditions, and no games. Just beautiful, authentic items presented with honesty and care. My team is trained to think long-term: we’re not in the business of one-time sales—we build relationships.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for Gemaee’s future? How will the platform continue to redefine the concept of owning and re-owning designer pieces in today’s luxury market in the UAE?

Answer: I see Gemaee becoming the first name people think of when they want to buy or sell luxury, not just in the UAE, but across the region. We’ll expand physically, educate more deeply, and hopefully shift mindsets across generations—showing that smart, circular luxury is not just chic, it’s the future.

Through Gemaee, Safiya Mehbaliyeva proves that in a city obsessed with the new, there is unmatched value and virtue in giving luxury a second life.
