One of Southern California’s most enduring all-ages music hubs Chain Reaction announced its permanent closure on Tuesday, with final shows on Dec. 18 and 19, marking the end of an era for the punk, hardcore, and alternative scenes. The Anaheim venue shared the news on Instagram on Dec. 9:

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Chain Reaction will be closing this month. Our final shows will be on December 18th and 19th with Movements.

For almost 30 years, Chain Reaction has proudly fostered the alt-music scene by creating a space for a community that the outside world “just didn’t get”. From your local bands gaining their footing at their first shows, to the humble beginnings of huge acts you now love, we’re grateful to have held a place in this scene for as long as we did.

This call wasn’t made quickly. We wrestled with it and have ultimately made the decision to close our doors.

We want to thank every band, fan and attendee of our shows. We want to thank the scene that supported us for almost three decades. We want to thank you for the friendships and memories made in our special club. Thank you for supporting us through the years and when we needed it most.

CHAIN REACTION FOREVER.

The decision comes amid broader challenges facing independent venues in the post-pandemic landscape. Since its opening in the 1996, Chain Reaction has been a cornerstone of the local and national alternative music community, transforming a former coffee lounge known as Public Storage Coffee Lounge into a DIY haven for emerging and established acts. 

The 250-capacity space has hosted thousands of performances, drawing bands like AFI, Rise Against, and Bad Religion alongside countless up-and-comers in genres spanning punk, ska, rock, and emo. 

Its all-ages policy and intimate, sweat-soaked atmosphere fostered a sense of raw connection between artists and fans, earning it a reputation as the heart of the alternative music scene in OC.

The venue’s resilience was tested in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary shutdown and an initial closure announcement; a groundswell of support from bands and fans ultimately revived it, allowing Chain Reaction to soldier on for another five years. 

Yet, as rising operational costs and shifting industry dynamics take their toll, the club now prepares to dim its lights for good. Fans have one last chance to bid adieu during the venue’s swan-song performances on December 18 and 19, headlined by Rancho Santa Margarita’s Movements alongside Militarie Gun, with support from Underbrook and Cheridomingo. 

The City of Anaheim’s Municipal government joined legions of fans in sharing their condolences in a post shared on Facebook:

We join many in sadness in hearing about the planned closure of Chain Reaction, the all-ages alternative music venue that has been part of our city for more than 30 years.

The small 250-person club at Euclid Street and Lincoln Avenue has been one of the few venues for teens to come and watch up-and-coming bands and is a legendary spot for underground punk pop, alt-rock and emo bands.

Chain Reaction’s pending closure is for internal business reasons with final shows slated for Dec. 18-19. The club faced closure before in 2020 and was revived with band and fan support.

Whatever the future holds, we celebrate Chain Reaction as part of Anaheim’s celebrated music history.
