Aishah Sofey posted a Ramadan-themed video this week in which she shared a childhood story about trying to fast for the first time.

The creator opened with a greeting to people observing the holy month and framed the clip as a personal memory from when she was younger.

“Ramadan Mubarak, to anyone and everyone who’s participating this month, in honor of Ramadan, I wanted to share a story from my childhood about Ramadan and fasting,” Sofey said at the start of the video.

She then explained she was around 12 at the time and wanted to join in, even though she said she was not yet required to fast.

“So, I was probably like 12 years old and I hadn’t hit puberty yet. So I didn’t have to fast, but I told my family that I wanted to try fasting because everyone was participating in fastening except for me and I felt left out,” she said.

Sofey described staying up late with her sister watching TV and realizing the family would soon be awake for suhoor, the pre dawn meal before the daily fast begins.

“Anyways, so this one night, I’m up so late with my sister watching Family Guy on our, on our box TV, right?” she said. “We were up so late. Really late, like, we stayed up all the way up until Sahor, and at this point, at this age, this was like the latest I’ve ever stayed up.”

She said she came up with what she called an “amazing idea” to pretend she had woken up early on her own to eat with the family.

“I was like, oh my God, my family’s gonna wake up and they’re gonna start eating Sahor, and they’re gonna know that I’m awake,” Sofey said. “I had this amazing idea that since I told them I wanted to participate in the fasting that month, that I just woke up on my own for support.”

Sofey acted sleepy as she entered the kitchen, but said the performance did not work.

“I’m so tired. I just woke up. I must have been a terrible actor,” she said.

She said her mother quickly caught on.

“Cause I think my mom knew right away. She did not like when I stayed up late,” Sofey said, before recalling how she reached for “these red velvet little cupcakes” and was stopped.

According to Sofey, the exchange escalated into a back and forth after she insisted she had only recently woken up.

“She’s like, I know that you stayed up all night. Go to bed,” Sofey said, recounting her mother’s response.

Sofey said she was frightened and ended up eating a little before going back to bed.

“I was so scared. Oh my God, I was so scared. So I just ate a little bit and then I went to bed,” she said. “I don’t even think I ended up fasting that day.”

She closed the video by telling followers she has more stories tied to Ramadan and fasting and invited them to ask for more.

“I just thought about that story today, I wanted to share it with you guys, since you all have met my mom now,” Sofey said. “I have a lot more stories about Ramadan fasting, so let me know if you wanna hear anymore. I hope everyone that is participating has an amazing Ramadan. Bye!”
