Unwrapped makes a triumphant return to digital platforms with Unwrapped Vol. 9 – The Songs of Kendrick Lamar Reimagined, an instrumental gem that beautifully upholds the series’ mission: transforming hip-hop into jazz, thanks to the brilliance of some of America’s most gifted musicians.
At the heart of this album is Kendrick Lamar as inspiration, a visionary artist whose raw yet poetic lyrics have earned him critical acclaim and a profound connection with audiences worldwide. His influence recently reached new heights as he headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
With 13 impeccably arranged tracks, Unwrapped makes history, turning a genre born from the streets and protest into a refined musical experience—perfect for moments of reflection, deep conversations, and peaceful solitude.
Produced by Anthony “Brew” Brewster, leader of House of Vibe, the project features an extraordinary ensemble of musicians, including Conrad Bauer, Karen Briggs, Leon Mobley, and Jesús Molina. Driven by their shared admiration for Lamar’s work and a deep love for music, they deliver a stunning reinterpretation of his most celebrated songs.
“Everyone involved in this project is a devoted Kendrick fan, and we poured our love into every aspect of this production. We’re beyond excited to share this collaborative effort with fellow Kendrick fans who have long cherished these songs, as well as to introduce new listeners to his artistry,” said Steve McKeever, founder of Hidden Beach Recordings.
For McKeever, the most important aspect of this release is its power to bring people together, transcending musical preferences and proving that music has the ability to erase boundaries in an increasingly divided world.
Unwrapped Vol. 9 adds a new dimension to Lamar’s work, layering his music with intricate jazz elements—including saxophone, piano, drums, and double bass—that enhance its richness and depth.
Since their groundbreaking debut in 2001, Unwrapped has been a trailblazer in blending hip-hop and jazz—two genres that, despite their distinct audiences, share a deep historical connection. Created by Hidden Beach CEO and founder Steve McKeever alongside producers Tony Joseph and Darryl Ross, the series aimed to merge these worlds in a way never done before.
The first Unwrapped album, Hidden Beach Presents: Unwrapped, took radio waves by storm, impressing even the most skeptical listeners. Its unprecedented fusion of hip-hop’s best hits with jazz’s instrumental brilliance made history, earning the distinction of being the first instrumental album by a new artist to debut in the Top 200 Pop Chart while also reaching #1 on the Jazz Chart.
Over two decades later, Unwrapped has produced nine volumes, reimagining artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac Shakur, Outkast, Naughty By Nature, Lil’ Kim, Nelly, Common, Big Pun, and more. Legendary jazz musicians—including Patrice Rushen, Jeff Lorber, Najee, Jeff Bradshaw, and Paul Jackson Jr.—have brought their artistry to these acclaimed interpretations, further cementing the series’ legacy.
With Vol. 9 – The Songs of Kendrick Lamar Reimagined, Unwrapped pushes the boundaries once again, merging the best of both worlds to create a one-of-a-kind album—at times moving, at times sensual.
