Judging from the predicted mercury levels, it may not feel like the end of summer, but the Labor Day  weekend is upon us.  Here are eleven splashy ways to celebrate the season’s last call.

On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5, Superba Food + Bread, both the Hollywood and Venice locations, will be serving brunch. Grab a reservation ahead of time via Resy, but they also accept walk-ins. Brunch begins at 9 a.m.  

Venice Steakhouse, American Beauty, will open the bar to guests starting at 11 a.m. Full bar includes local favorites like the Daisy, House Martini and Whisky Sour, and they will be serving dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.  

The lobby lounge of Hilton Los Angeles Culver City will host a Tasting Table Carnival with booths featuring wine and spirit vendors, and on-site activations and giveaways. Taste and sample products from brands like Paperback Brewing Company, Fresh Vine Wine, Tres Agaves Tequila and more. “The $25 ticketed event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 4 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and tickets are now available on Eventbrite.com.

There will also be smooth and swinging sounds of The Secret Jazz Band at the hotel on Saturday, Sept. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. Brunch highlights include crab cake Benedict, chicken and waffles, and Nutella crepes, along with a customizable Bloody Mary menu. 

Labor Day

Spend Labor Day at Tam O’Shanter for a Lobsterfest on Monday, Sept. 5, at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., on the patio. For $100 per person, the menu includes mixed green salad with summer tomatoes, kettle chips, two hard-shell boiled Maine lobsters served with drawn butter and lemons from Tam O’Shanter’s own tree, family style sides including corn on the cob, potato salad, and New England coleslaw, followed by chocolate and blueberry whoopie pies for dessert. Fuel up after a sun-filled beach day at the recently opened Pachamama with a new dose of Peruvian/Japanese fusion flavor on the Venice boardwalk. To honor Labor Day, Pachamama will offer a special that includes its classic beef and chimichurri sandwich with baked rosemary potatoes and an agua fresca for $15. This sandwich and drink special will be available from Friday, Sept. 2 through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5.

Trejo’s Coffee and Donuts  will serve up their fan-favorite buttermilk doughnuts with red and blue sprinkles, over the holiday weekend. Top off a fritter with Trejo’s signature Mexican latte, or beat the September L.A. heat with a classic cold brew.

The 30th anniversary celebration of Shin-Sen-Gumi takes place at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center in Torrance on Saturday, Sept. 3. The charitable cash-only event will donate all admission proceeds to the City of Torrance and its education facility. The family friendly day will feature a taste of Japan, celebrating the island nation’s culture with live music, entertainment, anime cosplay, food and drinks. In addition to taiko performances, vendors include Hakata Ramen, Otafuku, Kagura, Ichiko, and plenty of noodles, fried chicken, curry rice and shaved ice.  

Women-owned bakery Hotcakes Bakes in Mar Vista will offer a Saturday and Sunday special — buy any breakfast or lunch item and get the second half-off. There’s Goldy Lox salmon and Malibu avocado toasts, the new Eggs Benny with poached eggs and hollandaise, a choice of prosciutto, smoked salmon, or sautéed spinach on ciabatta and  a bed of arugula, served with fruit salad as well as sandwiches and salads. 

The women-founded bakery from Parisian Elfie Weiss is a westside favorite, specializing in French pastries, viennoiserie and  award-winning cupcakes and whole cakes.

Friday September 2 through Monday September, Capri Gelato in Marina del Rey will be giving away complimentary mini-cups of Passion Fruit Goat Cheese gelato all weekend.  “Fly Me to Capri” Gift Boxes complete with a flight of five  gelato flavors will also be available  for purchase.

Hendrick’s Gin Cucumber Lemonade 

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Hendrick’s Gin
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 1 part simple syrup
  • Top with soda water
  • 3 rounds of Cucumber and one wheel of lemon to garnish

Method: Combine all ingredients in a highball glass filled with cubed ice and lightly stir.
