The streets just northwest of downtown were busy with club-goers attending the Echo Park Rising music festival over the weekend, but that didn't stop three suspects from attacking a skateboarder over his ride, according to police and reports.

The skater in his 20s was fatally stabbed, cops said. Family members told CBS Los Angels his name is Carlos Arellano.

Los Angeles Police Department officials said the victim was walking on Sunset Boulevard, possibly with his girlfriend, when at least one of three suspects walking in the opposite direction demanded the board:

A struggle ensued, Arellano was punched, and he swung his board at one of the three, according to police and reports. It happened about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Sunset Boulevard, the LAPD said.

He was stabbed in his upper torso and was ultimately taken to a hospital, where he died, cops said. The trio fled.

Gang cops have reportedly become involved in the investigation, but it's still not clear if local gangsters are suspected.

Over the weekend a makeshift memorial to the skater was erected at the scene of the murder. A skateboard was fastened to a light pole.

A message was written on it. It says, in part, “Did they kill him for a skateboard? … Here's your fucking skateboard.”

A relative named Jessica Arellano told CBS Los Angeles this:

It's hard seeing my brother dying over someone who just wanted a skateboard. It's really ridiculous. Anyone who knows anything, please come forward.
