Marilyn Manson may have been the unintentional joke on goth kind. But Mark White is the real deal. White, who bills himself as the Gothic comedian, has performed everywhere from clubs to dungeons, cracking jokes about pasty ex-girlfriends (“She was so white, she was an extra in Schindler's List“); wearing makeup on the subway (“Gang members were asking my permission to tag the trains”); and sleeping with witches (“Sex on broomsticks is hot”). Smith looks like the average, dark-as-his-tortured-soul, nonconformist goth who lives outside the realm of normal and renounces all things cheery, colorful and cotton. He's also proof not only that misery loves company, but that sad is the new funny.
