Do you remember the turtle races at Brennan's Pub in Marina Del Rey (still happening every Thursday since 1976, by the way)? Thanks to the spirited overlords at the Bigfoot Lodge, here's a new wacky way to get drinkers to focus on something. Gentlemen, start your itty-bitty engine-free car for the Bigfoot Lodge Car Club's monthly Knotty Pine Derby Championship Race. There are a slew of rules for the car you build, but basically it can weigh no more than five ounces and be no more than seven inches in length. Says Scout Troop Leader Carol Moore, “The 'make your own' Pinewood Derby car is deeply ingrained into the nostalgic psyche of every person who spent their youth in or around the Boy Scouts of America. The Bigfoot Lodge and the Boy Scouts have always had a close connection. Boy Scout shirts are the uniform for all our bartenders, so naturally, bringing back the Pinewood Derby event was a perfect fit. The highlight of our past events was receiving the 'cease-and-desist' letter from the Boy Scouts of America. Which of course we immediately framed.” Bigfoot Lodge, 3172 Los Feliz Blvd., L.A.; Tues., Aug. 31, 9 p.m.; free. (323) 662-9227.
