I shudder to think what the Dowager Countess would have to say about this: A company called Wines That Rock is producing a Downton Abbey themed line of wines. Wines That Rock already produces Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd-branded wine.

Not to state the obvious, but — really? A show that thrives on a premise that exploits the snobbery of Britain's aristocracy is jumping into the wine business, a business that is also rife with snobbery, and this snobbery-squared experiment is being led by a company that makes crappy merlot for The Rolling Stones?

In a word, yes. And perhaps I'm jumping the gun on assuming this wine will be utter swill. As the Dowager Countess might say, “Don't be defeatist, dear, it's very middle-class.”

In fairness, the wines — a claret and a blanc — are being made in collaboration with Dulong Grands Vins de Bordeaux, and will be made from grapes from the same regions as the wines depicted in the show. A quick web search shows that Dulong Grands Vins de Bordeaux makes mainly affordable Bordeaux blends.

And so, we shall see. A release date for the wines has not yet been announced.
