Dennis RomeroAs if the world needs more free smut, the folks behind some of the world's most prominent adult video studios are bringing you Free Porn Day.
It happens at the NSFW site freepornday.com on Sept. 8.
The big question, of course, is why, especially when Free Porn Day is pretty much every day. The so-called porn-tube sites have virtually taken over the industry, providing hours and hours of content at no charge.
Free Porn Day is a way for the biggest adult video companies to battle the free smut juggernaut online, says Evil Angel chief financial officer Adam Grayson.
“There's a lot of content and user experience that's a lot better,” he said. “Let's have them take the Pepsi Challenge and maybe they decide it is worth a couple bucks a month.”
The day offers more than 1 million videos and 30 million–plus hours of content, organizers say. Participating studios include Evil Angel, Vivid, Met-Art and Kink. Evil Angel came up with the idea, Grayson said.
“By comparison, the largest free site has only about 10 percent of this volume of content,” organizers said in a statement. “Plus, keep in mind that with #FreePornDay, you get the paid members’ experience – full HD (if not 4K), accurate titles and descriptions, and photo galleries, among countless other premium features.”
They said that if Free Porn Day is successful, the website could remain as a portal to paid content offered by participating studios. Free clips could be offered as teasers, as is the case with the free tube sites.
The top free tube sites, including Pornhub, YouPorn, RedTube and GayTube, are controlled by Luxembourg-based MindGeek. That company was invited to participate but declined, Grayson said.
Endless free porn clips can be found on the free tube sites, but Grayson explained that they can be good for the bigger adult studios because they drive traffic to their paid content online. They do respond to takedown requests, too, he said.
“We still have a lot of people pay for our content,” he said. “If you're selling a digital subscription for a few bucks a month, the cost of delivery is pretty much zero.”
Still, if Free Porn Day is successful, and if it remains, it could cut out the middle man for these major players, most of which are based in Greater Los Angeles. It's a multibillion-dollar industry that has seen a difficult transition from DVD to streaming.
“We really tried to make it about and for the content creators,” Grayson said of Free Porn Day.
The “day” will actually start at 6 p.m. PST on Sept. 7 and stretch to 11:59 p.m. Sept. 8, he said.
“We don't want people feeling guilt for how they watch their porn,” Grayson said. “It's a celebration of smut. Let everybody take their vitamin B12 shots and clear their schedules, and it will be like college dorm days all over again.”
