Lots of dance troupes aspire to take classical ballet into the contemporary realm of the 21st century. Philadelphia-based Ballet X is one of the few that consistently has good ideas about how that can be done and done well when blessed with dancers equally comfortable on pointe or on the floor. Co-directors Matthew Neenan and Christine Cox, as well as several of the Ballet X dancers, came out of the well-respected Pennsylvania Ballet. Many troupes boast dancers trained in both ballet and modern dance but are unable to combine those vocabularies coherently; much of this troupe's strength is its often quirky, musically grounded choreographic vision, particularly in the work from Neenan, whose Frequencies is part of this program along with Beside Myself from Tobin Del Cuore and Still@Life from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.
