Lina LecaroFall is here and fashion is on the forefront of many Angelenos’ minds. We’re not just talking sweater weather, either. Coming out of October and Halloween — and from a larger perspective, coming out of last year’s lockdowns– what people are wearing has never been more important in terms of self expression and celebrating life. Los Angeles has never been considered a “fashion city” on par with New York or Paris, but as we’ve written so many times before, that’s ridiculous. L.A. drives this industry via red carpet appearances alone. More importantly, street looks, club looks and everything in between continue to inspire stylists (the big ones are all based here) who in turn dress the stars that influence what ends up in stores big and small. Worn Out L.A., highlights style and hot local looks, as seen in front of step-and-repeat walls, in runway presentations, and more. This month we report from Kornit Fashion Week, Art Hearts Fashion, Gucci’s Hollywood Love Parade, The Boulet Brothers Dragula bash, Kim Chi’s Anniversary and Halloween in Hollywood.
KORNIT FASHION WEEK
Kornit Fashion Week spotlit innovation, glamour and sustainability featuring designers who utilize the company’s technical textile digital printing process. Which made Asher Levine‘s show on Friday an exemplary fit. The N.Y.-bred/L.A. based designer meshes technology with natural, organic sensibilities. His latest collection featured printed graphics of algorithmic designs that represent as fractal structures contrasted by iridescent light. Levine’s graphics were created on Kornit Presto and Atlas Max printers, and printed on natural silks and organic cottons. Complimented with illumination technologies on purses and clothing pieces, Levine’s show was a futuristic exploration of Time and Light. “Dunkleosteus terrelli, this fish that existed 200 million years ago, inspired the handbags,” Levine told us after the show. “It’s like we’re different permutations of different fractals. It really fun to explore tying fractals to the human body. I feel like as humans we should be more curious about our universe and I’m so inspired by science.”
Julian Clancy‘s vibrant runway the night before saw 71-year-old Halston muse Pat Cleveland take her first cat walk in Los Angeles (thanks to her pal, show producer Bryan Rabin). Clancey’s turban and caftan-driven spectacle was also a vibrant fit for Kornit, with digital textile prints making the looks pop. Clancey’s clients include Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, while Levine’s include Lil Nas X and Doja Kat. Exchange LA provided a visually arresting backdrop for all the fashion shows and we look forward to seeing more from Kornit there next season. More on these two designers here and here.

COSTUME COUTURE
We gotta give it to Kim Kardashian. After that weird yet intriguing all black moment at the Met Gala, she followed it up with some Cher-worthy bodycon looks on SNL and a pretty fierce Thierry Mugler look on Halloween. If you’ve got the big bucks why not rock high fashion for Halloween? The look was seen at Roc Nation empresario Lenny Santiago rager last week at The Highlight Room at the Dream Hotel. Co-hosted by singer Teyana Taylor and actress Karrueche the “Costume Couture” themed party was presented by Ace of Spades, D’usse and Monogram (so there were lots of doobies as well as boobies). Other biggies at the bash included Drake, Doja Cat, Big Sean, Chloe Bailey, Roddy Ricch, Ty Dolla $ign and more.

BOULET BROTHERS DRAGULA BASH
The killer queens celebrated a new season of their hit horror-themed drag competition at the Globe Theatre just in time for Halloween. Featuring a screening of the show and lots of photo ops with a new slew creepy cool contestants, the blood-splattered bash was a blast. Watch Season 4 of Dragula on Shudder now. GUCCI LOVE PARADE
Gucci seems like it’s everywhere lately thanks to the upcoming movie starring Lady Gaga, but the brand has always pushed heavy in Hollywood. The Gucci Love Parade collection designed by Alessandro Michele, saw its most glimmering backdrop on Hollywood Boulevard in October. And the stars weren’t confined to the sidewalk. Jared Leto, Jeremy Pope, Steve Lacy, Grace Johnson, Jodie Turner-Smith, St.Vincent, Miranda July, Phoebe Bridgers, Janaya Khan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Macaulay Culkin, and Hayden Pedigo are just a few familiar faces in the show. We love the brand’s 70’s nerd chic mixed with retro variety show glam, and we get why the Walk of Fame might seem like a good place to stage a runway, but those of us who live here and know what the boulevard is really like especially in light of the current homeless problem, felt a real disconnect with the $600 shades and mismatched glitz of it all. Michele obviously sees it differently.
From the designer’s press statement:
“This boulevard of stars lends perfect support to my uncurbed love for the classical world. Hollywood is, after all, a Greek temple populated by pagan divinities. Here actors and actresses are acknowledged as heroes of the myth: hybrid creatures with the power to hold divine transcendence and mortal existence at the same time, both the imaginary and the real. They are the idols of a new contemporary cosmogony, embodying a persistence of the sacred. Aphrodite, Theseus, Pandora and Medusa still live in Hollywood’s Olympus. Beyond reach, and yet, so human.”
