If Saving Mr. Banks whet your appetite for flying nannies and dancing chimney sweeps, then head to El Capitan Theatre starting today for Disney's Sing-Along Mary Poppins. On opening night at 7:45 p.m., come in your best Bert or Mary Poppins garb for a costume contest. You'll see rare, behind-the-scenes photos from the Walt Disney archives along with some special surprises. Tickets for this event, taking place daily through Jan. 20, are on sale at elcapitantickets.com.

Then, at midnight, it's the heroes in a half shell at the Vista Theatre. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the 1990 classic, tells the origin story of the four turtles-turned-vigilantes, under the training of an old rat, who must take on Splinter and the Foot Clan. Robbie Rist, the voice of Michaelangelo, and possibly more special guests will join this Nerds Like Us event. Costumes are encouraged. Pizza cravings may occur.

Saturday, Jan. 11

From the Los Angeles Music Center and Dance Camera West comes Giselle at the Aero Theatre at 7:30 p.m., telling the tale of a German peasant girl with a weak heart who falls in love with a betrothed nobleman disguised as a peasant. All ticket buyers to this screening get the chance to win passes to the Royal New Zealand Ballet's production of Giselle at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for four performances from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

Wednesday, Jan. 15

The annual Focus on Female Directors returns to the Egyptian Theatre for its ninth year, starting at 7:30 p.m. This shorts program will cele-brate the work of women behind the camera, with screenings of music videos, documentaries, animations and more. Included are Carol Rhyu's Juice of My Heart, an electronic-music video with a B – horror film twist; the first episode of Hye Yun Park's web series Brunch Avec Au Pair, which follows a 30-something Korean videographer in the Big Apple; and Jordana Spiro's (My Boys, The Mob Doctor) Skin, a drama about a young boy who tries to reach out to the girl he likes. There will be discussions with some of the filmmakers after the screening, as well as a reception in the lobby. Attendees will be entered into a drawing for a “director's empowerment bag.”
