One Dead, One Hospitalized after Five-Vehicle Collision near Old Highway 395

BONSALL, CA (June 25, 2024) Mark Anthony Bengal and Phillip Mattson were arrested Wednesday, after a fatal 5-car accident on Interstate 15.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m., on the southbound lanes of the freeway near Old Highway 395.

According to reports, the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a Nissan Titan, causing the Chevrolet to become disabled in the southbound lanes where it was subsequently struck by a passing Volkswagen Tiguan.

A Toyota Camry then rear-ended the Volkswagen, while a Kia Soul collided with the front left side of the Chevrolet. Emergency personnel declared the 32-year-old female passenger from Compton, inside the Camry, dead at the scene.

Paramedics transported the 32-year-old man from Perris who was driving the Camry to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities arrested the Chevy driver, 26-year-old Mark Anthony Bengal of Chula Vista, on suspicion of felony DUI.

The Volkswagen driver, 80-year-old Phillip Mattson of Encinitas, was also arrested on similar charges.

Officials are requesting witnesses of the fatal multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 to contact the CHP Oceanside Area office at 760-643-3400.
