We can’t believe we’re actually saying this but the 2022 Emmys broadcast last night was really entertaining. From Keenan Thompson’s wacky hosting moments to the diverse mix of presenters to the fabulous fashion (almost no fails) to the actual winners list, everything came together beautifully and hit just right.

Of course, the bar is low. The Oscars’ Will Smith debacle is nowhere near forgotten, and after COVID-19 postponements and pared down presentations, everyone (the stars and us viewers) were ready for a little escapist glamour. We got it, and we also got some weird and wonderful speeches from Lizzo, Sheryl Lee Ralph and our girl Jennifer Coolidge –we call her our girl ever since we bonded during a phone chat for this publication. (Never shared this before, but we got cut off during the interview so we lucked into two conversations with one of our favorite queens of comedy and made friends! It felt like we did anyway, that’s her gift– even when she’s playing complex, ditzy or even villainous women, she’s authentic and engaging). Her dance as the show’s music started playing her off was so perfect and so her!

Our other highlights last night: Pete Davidson (some are saying he didn’t deserve to announce “Best Comedy” but we’re still of the mind that Ted Lasso isn’t an actual comedy, but a drama– that’s what’s questionable here– plus the comic wore a Dickies suit!); The Brady Bunch reunion; The Simpsons’ Botox prank  (awkward and awesome) and Jean Smart keeping it real with her Botox shout-out; Oprah; the thank you lists at the bottom of the screen (if your name was there it was surely a cool thing); and announcer Sam Jay (she slayed). Winners and embeds to LA Weekly stories about them below.
