Couple Killed in Car Accident on Pantano Road Ramp

TUCSON, AZ (April 17, 2023) – On Wednesday afternoon, William Burdett Shope and Hilda Maness Shope died following a traffic accident on Pantano Road. The incident happened on April 5th at about 12:40 p.m. on the southbound Pantano Road ramp. According to police, a white 2022 Toyota Camry driven by 86-year-old William and his wife, 85-year-old Hilda, was entering the ramp from westbound Tanque Verde Road. Furthermore, William failed to make a curve, and the Camry left the roadway. The Camry then slammed into a concrete barrier. Unfortunately, Hilda died at the scene, and authorities transported William to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he later died. Additionally, both directions of the roadway were temporarily shut down to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties but have since been reopened to the public. At this time, it was unknown if William had a medical emergency during the incident. An active investigation is underway.
