As Californians celebrated the return of same-sex marriage to the Golden State, with the first ceremony happening just minutes after the announcement of its return at San Francisco City Hall, it appears that L.A. might have missed the boat.

After being nudged by California Attorney General Kamala Harris to get off its ass and start issuing licenses, the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office issued a statement at 4:45 p.m. saying it would do so “effective immediately.” But only one couple that we know of got its license on, according to Regina Ip of the registrar's office:

Prop. 8 plaintiffs Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo. The duo's ceremony was scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at L.A. City Hall, with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presiding.

Other than those two, it appears, those who want to get married today are out of luck. The only office able to record marriages, the county registrar's Norwalk location, closed at 5 p.m.

The office states that it has “has expanded the capacity for marriage licensing and civil marriage ceremonies.” Just not today, the most momentous of days. Really:

Expanded hours? They're coming next week, when the first licenses will be available at 8 a.m. Monday, according to representatives of the registrar.

The hours include an added day, Wednesday, for the registrar's West Hollywood and Long Beach locations and an extra chapel added to Norwalk, registrar spokeswoman Elizabeth Knox told us.

Did they miss a huge opportunity to be a part of a major celebration? That's for a question for you, the people. The registrar's office works for you.
