Polls have been closed for three and a half hours, and the Los Angeles City Clerk has managed to count less than 50,000 votes.
At least LA County had that damn fog as an excuse.
LA Times columnist Steve Lopez is going absolutely bonkers on twitter:
it could take three weeks for city to count votes in this election, despite low turnout. i am not joking. what century are we living in?

california, tech capital of the world, can't figure out a touch-screen system for absentee voters?
— Steve Lopez LA Times (@LATstevelopez) May 22, 2013
how long would it take these knuckleheads to count votes if we had a respectable turnout? anyone got any medical marijuana?
— Steve Lopez LA Times (@LATstevelopez) May 22, 2013
can anyone take a picture of the vote-counting abacus city clerk uses?

i'm watching kcal 9. the bear stealing garbage is very efficient. can we get him to count votes in the l.a. city election?
— Steve Lopez LA Times (@LATstevelopez) May 22, 2013
here's a thought on vote-counting. let's get some help from countries with more advanced and reliable systems. haiti. cuba. zimbabwe.

Jesus. Someone get Steve a drink! Seriously though, he does have a point. Some cooler mannered comments:
The #LAmayor anger tweets abt slow vote counting are everywhere.Note LA elections use a ballot/voting system unlike other CA locales..
— John Myers (@johnmyers) May 22, 2013
11,527 election day ballots counted in #LA in 162 minutes.That's 71 ballots a minute.My staff @50p1 could do that!Sigh.

If ur curious why #lavote updates are taking so long, first batch of poll votes was delivered around 930pm, I'm told. bit.ly/10NVHsL

And of course, someone had to go and defend the poor folks over at the city clerk's office:
I challenge journos howling about slow results to work a polling place next election and see what's involved. Then howl.
