When the now notorious “masturbation billboard” went up over the Sunset Strip last month, we were sort of proud.

After all, New York City, the world capital of municipal self-aggrandizement, couldn't handle adult website Pornhub's “all you need is hand” message about staying in with your iPad for a nice romantic evening of loving thyself.

The Times Square version of the advert came down quickly after management at the Hilton DoubleTree, to which it was affixed high in the sky, said it was just not appropriate for its touristy clientele.

But in L.A., capital of the global porn industry, the billboard seemed to be at home perched across from the racy Standard hotel. Or was it?

The West Hollywood run of the advertisement also saw its share of complaints and, ultimately, it too came down—this week.

But the outrage from tourists (not in your backyard!) who shielded the eyes of their children, and from the owner of Carneys restaurant, which was right beneath the giant image, couldn't bring the monument to self-motivation down.

Nope.

A spokesman for Pornhub told us the company had simply—and successfully—completed its two-week lease of the billboard. The ad came down Monday as a result, he said.

If you ask us, despite the provincial protestation, this is a victory for Los Angeles as a cosmopolitan metropolis. While New York's Times Square was once the epicenter of peep-show smut, it's L.A. that is the new place for tolerance.

No pun intended, but we really hung in there. We're beaming … with Angeleno pride.
