Heavy metal honky-tonk band WhiskeyDick bless NAMM with a gig at the Doll Hut this week, so we chatted…

L.A. WEEKLY: When did the band form, where, and what was the mission?

FRITZ: WhiskeyDick was formed in 2005 in Fort Worth, Texas after becoming close friends during both of our metal band careers performing shows together on a regular basis. Starting out, the only plan was to simply write and play music together, music that we love as we’ve always had the same ideas and views that great songs come from life experiences, and for us it is the feeling and a sense of release. At the time, we never imagined that 15 years later we would still be doing exactly what we love and started out to do — play music from the heart and soul.

Describe the sound…

Our sound is derived from something we can’t really explain as we always just write our music based off what we feel. However, it definitely comes from our influences and love for metal, classic rock and traditional country. It’s pretty much a concoction from hell with a mix of all types music that has collided into what we call “heavy metal honky-tonk”.

What has been the proudest band moment so far?
Being able to do what we love, playing music, for 15 years is definitely something that we are proud of and we never take for granted. But I would say our proudest moment to date would be just the two of us performing at Wacken 2017 in Germany.
What can we expect from this Doll Hut show?
Our upcoming N.A.M.M. Friday show January 17 at our favorite bar in California… The World Famous Doll Hut in Anaheim! This is definitely going to be one show not to miss with performances by James Hunnicut, Surface Tension, Beyond the Roots, URN, and Celebrity Stalker! Also there will be a few special performances during our set with James Hunnicut so don’t miss out. It’s always a killer time at Doll Hut!
When that’s done, what else do you have planned for 2020?
2020 is already filling up with great things/events for WhiskeyDick as we are currently working on our seventh studio album and feeling damn excited about the new material. January 16, we are honored to be back and kicking things off at this year’s Dimebash at The Observatory in Orange County. We then follow it up in March with an every-Friday residency at The Doll Hull with James Hunnicut and more California dates TBA. May, April, June we will be touring the states Including a great festival in Nebraska (PONDSTOCK) June 4-7 before heading back to Europe for mid-June through early August tour. We then will be returning to Muddy Roots Festival Labor Day weekend in Tennessee! From there we are planning to tour the states again for the remainder of 2020 with some good friends!
WhiskeyDick plays with James Hunnicut, Surface Tension, Beyond the Roots, URN and Celebrity Stalker at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 17 at the Doll Hut.
