Local comic Kevin Broberg and his posse have as many stories as O. Henry, only they're funnier and naughtier. In 2011, Broberg started hosting Quote Unquote, a comedic storytelling series based around Broberg's choice of historical quote. For past shows, he has assembled fellow comics including Bobcat Goldthwait, Bill Burr, Greg Fitzsimmons and Jackie Kashian, as well as writers for TV's The Simpsons, 30 Rock and The Office, to craft 10-minute, personal stories inspired by pith from Jane Austen (“Surprises are foolish things. The pleasure is not enhanced, and the inconvenience is often considerable.”), Dorothy Parker (“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.”) and other luminaries. You may have heard Simon Petrie recall the time he worked as a fetish master's apprentice or David Jacks talk about getting an erection in front of his parents or Broberg's own story about the first time he masturbated to a copy of a JC Penney catalog and National Geographic — kids today have it so easy. Tonight's installment includes Broberg, Jeanie Bergen, Kinga Suto, Dave King and others TBA. They'll be working around a quotation from everyone's favorite Austrian philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein: “I don't know why we are here, but I'm pretty sure it is not in order to enjoy ourselves.” Lyric Hyperion Theater, 2106 Hyperion Ave., Silver Lake; Sun., July 14, 7:30 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show; $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
