What is HHC?

The cannabis industry is one that’s ever-changing and always evolving. With that brings the emergence of new cannabinoids and compounds for consumers to learn about — and even try. Today, we’re focusing entirely on HHC: an up-and-coming chemical compound that the industry is buzzing about from all angles.

Below, we’ll address HHC’s properties, its legality, and even where you can get some for yourself. Let’s get started.

Defining HHC and its Properties

HHC is short for hexahydrocannabinol. This chemical compound was originally discovered back in the 1940s when a chemist named Roger Adams decided to add hydrogen molecules to THC. The process — called hydrogenation — is common within other industries, but it was somewhat new to the cannabis world at the time.

When Adams added hydrogen to THC, he created HHC. Today, the process is still the same. However, in order to stick with legal regulations, people now extract HHC from hemp, instead.

Whether or not HHC occurs naturally in the plant is still up for debate. While some sources claim the compound is present in only trace amounts, there isn’t any research to back that up. For now, we can assume that this cannabinoid is entirely synthetic, and only professionals can try their hand at crafting HHC extracts.

HHC’s Characteristics

Whenever new cannabinoids arrive on the market, there’s usually one main question on everybody’s mind: does it get you high?

In high doses, it appears as though HHC has THC-like effects. Thus, you will feel like you’re slightly high. However, most consumers report that the cannabinoid is similar to but not as potent as delta-8 THC’s properties.

This does depend on the consumer, though: other people have stated that their HHC products felt more potent than delta 8. Thus, when dosing, you have to be cognizant about how much you’re taking to ensure you’re having a comfortable, safe experience.

Because of the similar effects, people have been turning to HHC products instead of delta 8 in states that have banned D8. For many, HHC is a great, legal alternative to delta 8 THC products.

The Effects of HHC

While every person’s experience is different, consumers have reported HHC as having energetic, blissful, and mood-enhancing properties. Some experience levels of pain and stress relief, all while feeling sharper and more focused on tasks at hand.

In general, the compound has been described as more relaxing than stimulating, but it still does offer some stimulating properties. These effects are just more subdued than you may be used to with typical delta 9 THC. HHC is ideal for helping you feel more level-headed and motivated; though some consumers are more energized after consumption. It simply depends!

However, if you consume too much, you may find yourself feeling too high and uncomfortable. Dosing is crucial with a new compound like HHC, so you should always start with a low dose and slowly increase it if need be. There are some potential side effects of HHC with overconsumption, including the following:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Altered visual and auditory perceptions
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

For now, there is still more research needed to draw concrete conclusions regarding HHC’s effects. But, in general, you can think of it as a more subdued version of THC. In low doses, you likely don’t have to worry about feeling high; instead, you’ll experience more therapeutic results. However, high doses may remind you more of a dose of delta 8 THC, so be mindful during consumption.

Is HHC Legal?

Good question. Right now, the legality surrounding HHC is incredibly murky — as things tend to be in the cannabis industry.

Technically, products derived from hemp that contain less than 0.3% THC are federally legal in the United States. However, products that are analogous to Schedule I Drugs — like THC — are illegal. This would encompass HHC. So, which is it?

Currently, there are no regulations regarding HHC. Brands like ours can legally ship HHC products to all 50 states without issue. This is why the cannabinoid is becoming so popular in states where delta 8 THC is illegal. While they may not be able to try D8, HHC is the next best thing. However, there is a good chance that this will change in the future.

As HHC continues to gain popularity, it’s possible that it may have a fate similar to delta 8 THC. States may choose to regulate or even ban HHC if they want to, and residents must comply with state law over federal law.

To be safest when purchasing HHC then, you have to be vigilant when it comes to research. You should only buy HHC from brands that have their products’ third-party lab-test results available and have ample real customer reviews. If you ignore these steps, you may be buying something that isn’t ideal for your health and wellness. Always take the time to do proper research about a brand’s products before purchasing from them, especially when it comes to an unregulated compound like HHC.
