With the rise in popularity of cannabidiol (CBD)-infused products, manufacturers and researchers are trying to understand more about its potential therapeutic effects. It is mainly used by people for its analgesic effect, anti-inflammatory effect, anxiolytic effect, and anxiety and stress-reducing effects. However, some users are still skeptical about these uses of this hemp-derived cannabinoid. In this article, we will look at the anxiolytic effect of CBD, and what science can tell about it; read on to know more about it.

How Does CBD Work For Anxiety?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the major cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. Its anxiolytic effect is due to its stimulation of the ECS, which is a network of complex cell-signaling systems that helps to regulate homeostasis. For instance, it regulates a range of functions like sleep, mood, memory, appetite, fertility, and reproduction.

The ECS influences the functioning of the following:

  • The central and peripheral nervous systems
  • The cardiovascular system
  • Neuronal activity

How Does CBD Interact With The Human Body?

It is understood that CBD health benefits and therapeutic effects are produced by cannabidiol’s interaction with various receptor systems of the ECS.

Studies have shown that the anxiolytic effect of CBD is due to its interaction with serotonin receptors, CB1 receptors, and the amygdala-hippocampal-cortico- striatal circuit. This influence of cannabidiol on these systems results in a reduction of anxiety in different ways.

Current studies show that the anxiolytic effect of CBD is mostly attributed to its interaction with serotonin receptors. Remember that serotonin is a neurotransmitter that influences various homeostatic functions. Above all, it is also known as the ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter.

What Is The Current Status Of CBD Research?

It is an irony that the hype about the therapeutic effect and health benefits of CBD has outpaced science. That said, the FDA has approved the medical use of two cannabidiol-based medicines, and they are listed below:

  • Epidiolex: This is a CBD-derived drug that can be used for treating epileptic seizures in children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
  • Sativex: This drug uses a combination of CBD and THC, and it is used for reducing spasticity due to multiple sclerosis.

However, there are no FDA-approved CBD-infused drugs for reducing or treating anxiety-related issues.

These are the important points that you must know before using cannabidiol (CBD) for treating anxiety-related issues.
