Long Beach health officials issued a warning on Thursday that mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus have been discovered in the central area of Long Beach, near Chittick Field, according to the Press-Telegram.

Though no human infections have been reported, Los Angeles and Orange Counties have detected the virus in birds and mosquitos.

According to city spokesman Ed Kamlam, the city's Vector Control Program is setting additional mosquito traps in the area. City workers have posted warning signs around Chittick Field.

Officials are urging residents to avoid mosquito-infested sites.

The West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms include fever, body aches, rash, nausea, vomiting and headache. In some cases a bite can be fatal.
