Dennis RomeroFor the second time this month in Southern California, authorities say suspects extracting “honey oil” from marijuana sparked an explosive blaze.
This one happened over the weekend in the 1200 block of North Havenhurst Drive in West Hollywood, according to L.A. County Fire officials.
Rescuers responded to the blast at an apartment building …
… some time before 7:03 p.m. Friday, according to county fire statements.
Rescuers immediately had to deal with one patient and structural damage, officials said. They told City News Service that the patient in question was the suspect trying to make honey oil:
That victim was hospitalized with first- and second-degree burns.
County fire authorities, meanwhile, said the building was damaged so badly that 12 residents had to seek shelter elsewhere: Two units were “red tagged,” meaning they were deemed uninhabitable.
Flammable liquid and fire are used to extract honey oil from lower grade marijuana. It's sometimes sold at area dispensaries.
On Jan. 6 three men suffered burns at a home in Monrovia after a blast blamed on honey oil extraction.
