It turns out that reports of the demise of Wendy Greuel's TV campaign were premature. Greuel released a new attack ad this afternoon, attacking mayoral rival Eric Garcetti for holding a polo fundraiser with a convicted felon.

The Greuel campaign has reserved about $300,000 worth of time for this spot, according to multiple sources.

That's not a lot, but as they hold more fundraisers they may try to add more time.
Jeff Millman, Garcetti's spokesman, called the ad “further evidence that she will say or do anything to get elected.”
“This is breathtaking hypocrisy from Wendy Greuel,” Millman said, “because she voted for this project twice and took money from a convicted felon herself in several campaigns, including her mayoral campaign.”
Greuel first attacked Garcetti over the Ripinsky connection last month. Ripinsky has not returned calls from the Weekly seeking comment.
[Update, 6:24 p.m.: Paul Sorrell, Ripinsky's attorney, said Greuel is making “false charges” in the press.
“We intend to look at what she's saying and evaluate our client's legal rights and remedies against her and anyone else involved in disseminating these false and defamatory statements,” Sorrell said.]
It's not clear how much traction this attack will get, because Greuel is running so low on cash. That's because her campaign team saw that she was trailing in the polls in mid-April and decided they had to get back in the race before absentee ballots were mailed. The campaign spent a whopping $1.4 million over two weeks on two TV ads — one that touted her endorsements, another that attacked Garcetti for his support for digital billboards. That decision looks a little dicey now that Greuel barely has enough money to stay on TV in the campaign's final days. But if she wins, it will be seen as the decision that saved her campaign.
Greuel also has the luxury of relying on support from the Department of Water and Power union and the L.A. Police Protective League. The LAPPL, which represents LAPD officers, today put $850,000 into an independent committee backing Greuel, and is expected to use some of that on TV.
Meanwhile, Garcetti continues to blanket the airwaves with his negative ad.
