West Hollywood announced that it would begin to enforce $250 fines for people who do not wear face coverings in public.

A tweet was sent out by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, West Hollywood division on Thursday, saying that an additional $50 fee would be added to the fine, bringing the total to $300.

The West Hollywood Sheriff’s said that citations were a “last option” but one that they felt had to be made as “risk to community health is too great.”

A statewide face covering order was set by Governor Gavin Newsom on June 18, as positive cases and hospitalizations were starting to rise in California.

Even with the order, multiple sheriffs across the state openly said they would not enforce the mask order.

Los Angeles County has seen 107,667 positive cases and 3,454 deaths through Thursday.
