When you need a last minute Halloween costume, one of three things usually happens:

1) You drop a bunch of dough on something elaborate that ends up being so cumbersome you regret it.

2) You go the easy slut route.

3) You dig into the closet to create something topical, musical, or ironic.

At KCRW's wild Masquerade Ball last night and VEVO's Six Feet Under bash at Hollywood Forever Cemetery a couple nights before, all of the above was on display. Here, then, are some of the most popular costumes with music/pop culture pizazzaz. Peep our Nightranger slideshow for more pics.

5. Social Media Babe

Human Facebook pages, Twitter boards like this one and even a “Fail Whale” got loads of “likes,” “follows” and “friends” at the weekend's parties. We're guessing this gal will be tagged a lot today. She'd better RT this!

4. Not quite relevant rocker

Our theory that every party always has a Slash was not disproven this year. There were also a couple Axls — sadly, no fat Axls, though — and this clever Kid Rock. Ok, it's not much of a costume, but we prefer it to the over the top Steel Panther-type generic metal dude, which is only some dayglo shades away from the dudes below.

3. Gaudy pop sensations

There were plenty of folks Laughing Their Fucking Asses Off, but the ladies pulled off the LMFAO look better than the guys. And by the way, Red Foo's fro wins most seen wiggy of the weekend.

2.Alternative icon

The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne has a pretty recognizable look (as does Bjork in her Oscar gown, above). Still, this guy really needs a bubble prop of some sort. He blew glitter around all night instead. Most didn't recognize whom he was trying to be, but as with most culture referencing costumes, figuring them out is half the fun.

1. Not so smooth criminal

Forget about Freddy or Jason, this season's biggest villain was Dr. Conrad Murray, the King of Pop's doc. The guy in this photo has MJ with him, but another version wore the glove himself and carried around an IV stand and giant syringe all night. Talk about a thriller killer.
