Don Was is half of absurdist duo Was (Not Was) and one of the most respected producers in the record racket, having helmed platters for Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. In his capacity with the latter, he was asked to mix and supervise overdubs on the bonus tracks for the reissue of the Stones' 1972 rawksterpiece, Exile On Main Street. (The extras are available on two of the reissue's eleventeen variations, though we're not sure about the one that comes with Anita Pallenberg's used panties.) Was did a killer job, with the new work on the gorgeous ballad “Following the River” being particularly spectacular. “The Stones didn't want to make somethin' that was just for a musicologist to listen to once and file away,” he told the Weekly recently. “There was a sense that people are payin' for it and let's give 'em something that bears the scrutiny of repeated listening.” Tonight Don will be grilled by the Grammy Foundation's Scott Goldman about Exile and the Stones, as well as scrutinize tracks from the album and answer questions from the audience. Rude jokes from lame journalists about Anita's knickers will probably be ignored.
