Downey Motorcars owner Ruben Hernandez, who had allegedly tried to use voodoo against the prosecutor and investigators assigned to his case, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison Wednesday for crimes related to real estate fraud.

Authorities said they discovered a voodoo shrine with the names of the prosecutor, investigators and the case number at the home where Hernandez had been staying. The voodoo dolls were said to have been dunked head down in cups of water with pins in the eyes.

After being a fugitive for a year, Hernandez was arrested in Pasadena on Feb. 12, 2009. He had allegedly led investigators on a mile long, 80 mile per hour car chase. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Hernandez was booked into Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $4 million bail.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered Hernandez to serve twelve years in prison for his May conviction of filing false applications and grand theft. The DMV estimates that proceeds from more than $5 million in auto and real estate loans were handled fraudulently.

Hernandez is due back in court next Wednesday to face 28 counts of fraud related to his car dealership.
