The city of Monterey Park will be hosting a vigil Tuesday in honor and remembrance of those whose lives were lost in the Lunar New Year mass shooting.

The vigil will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Monterey Park City Hall on 320 West Newmark Ave.

“We believe that it is important for our community to come together to remember and heal,” Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo said in a statement.

Attendees are being asked to bring flowers and candles, just as community members have in front of Star Dance Studio, the site of the shooting.

A survivor resource center was also opened at the Langley Senior Center in Monterey Park, offering community support and mental health support.

The shooting occurred Saturday, hours after the city had concluded its Lunar New Year celebration.

The dance studio, which typically remains open until 11 p.m., remained open after the celebration, when gunman Huu Can Tran killed 11 and injured nine others.

Tran was later found in Torrance, with a SWAT team finding him dead inside a white van, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A potential motive for the shooting has not yet been established, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said there are no other suspects and the community could rest assured the suspect is no longer a threat.
