After seizing more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a South L.A. home, a Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad truck exploded, injuring nine and damaging several nearby cars and homes.

LAPD received a tip that the home had both homemade and fireworks from China and a man was arrested on suspicion of possessing the fireworks, now on $5,000 bail.

Early KTTV reports said there was a scheduled detonation as local air crews covered the event and captured the explosion, although LAPD said it is “unknown” how the explosion occurred.

“Our Bomb Squad officers were in the process of seizing over 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks in the area of 27th Street and San Pedro,” LAPD said in a tweet. “Some of the fireworks were being stored in our Bomb Squad trailer as a precautionary measure. Unknown at this time what caused an explosion.”

The area was evacuated and LAPD expects hours worth of investigating as they attempt to “render the area safe.”
