A man was severely beaten at a downtown Los Angeles club over the weekend, police said. His condition was so grave that homicide detectives have already opened an investigation, the Weekly has learned.

The attack happened early yesterday at Icon LA Ultra Lounge near Staples Center and LA Live:

Police are calling it an assault and say it happened inside the venue at 1248 S. Figueroa St. shortly before 1:30 a.m., which is when the victim was taken to a hospital, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman told us.
