Because we can always use more places for coffee: In 10 months or so, popular Santa Cruz coffee roaster Verve Coffee Roasters will open its own space in Los Angeles. According to Alexandra LittleJohn, Verve's business development manager for Southern California, the roaster “has signed the lease for the permanent location,” which, once built out, will serve as a roastery, cafe and retail space. The exact details of the location are being kept confidential for now, though co-owner and coffee buyer Colby Barr says it's “connected to a really unique project in a landmark location.”

“We are very excited about L.A., its art and food scene, and the incredibly unique neighborhoods across the city,” Barr says. “We are excited to be part of the developing landscape and the perpetual 'California lifestyle' that we consider an integral part of our brand.”

In advance of the permanent location, Verve will open a training facility and tasting room in downtown's Arts District to support wholesale accounts and host public events. When the roastery/cafe does open, the training facility and tasting room “will be integrated into the new space,” Barr says, and “public events will absolutely continue” there.

In the meantime, you can find Verve Coffee beans at a few coffee shops around town, including Fix Coffee in Echo Park and Single Origin at the Original Farmers Market. And you also can check out Verve's Frequently Asked Questions page, if only because it has the most helpful question-and-answer we've seen in a long while (i.e., “What coffee should I buy for my mom?”). Then maybe you can put on your Encyclopedia Brown cap and try to guess where in the city, exactly, Verve's coffee shop will be. Consider it something to do after you put together your NFL fantasy football team. Start your office pools now.
