The man family members identified as the 20-year-old fatality in Sunday's freak lightning strikes on Venice Beach was a community college student who was transferring to USC in the fall.

Nick Fagnano was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks who worked on the bar staff of the new Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. His Twitter account also identified Fagnano as a downtown L.A. resident.

The hotel sent us this statement:

We are saddened to have lost a colleague and a friend, we offer our love and support to his family and loved ones.

Fagnano was at the beach with friends Sunday afternoon when he decided to head to the ocean once last time to rinse off before calling it a day, according to reports.

First responders were called to the 3800 block of Ocean Front Walk about 2:21 p.m. Sunday to take eight lightning strike victims to hospitals, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A coroner's official said Fagnano died at Marina Del Rey Hospital.

The young man was a pitcher on the Notre Dame High School baseball team. He attended Santa Barbara City College and Santa Monica College, according to reports.
