Updated at the bottom with one of the reasons cops think the suspect had intent to rape. First posted at 9:04 a.m.

A Valley High School teen who pulled a girl into a restroom to kiss her was in jail today for alleged kidnapping with the intent to commit rape, cops said.

The LAPD says in a statement that 18-year-old Jesus Gabriel Lares pulled a 17-year-old classmate into a boys restroom against her will and …

… “began kissing her.” The department adds:

… His actions were interrupted when another student knocked on the door.

It's not clear to us why pulling someone into a restroom for a kiss would lead to an “intent-to-rape allegation.” We called the department for more details but were unable to get through to a detective or supervisor.

It happened Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the continuation school, police said.

According to the LAPD statement:

Lares was separated from the victim by a teacher after she discovered they were inside the boy's restroom. The victim told the teacher what Lares had done to her at which time the she notified authorities. The victim was not physically injured during the attack.

Lares bail was set at a whopping $1 million.

Anyone with info about the case was asked to call detectives at 818-838-9941.

[Update at 3:13 p.m.]: Lt. Paul Vernon tells the Weekly that the suspect “tried to disrobe” her and that and other reasons led investigators to believe he wanted to rape the girl.

He also said there were other pertinent details detectives didn't want to disclose to protect the victim.
