In the annals of WTF, this story stands out: We told you about Pavel Valkovich, the 28-year-old who allegedly tried to hire a hitman to kill another prospective hitman he had attempted to enlist.

On Monday Valkovich received a sentence of 18 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of solicitation to commit murder on another subject, an informant who worked with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help unravel the suspect's alleged involvement in an identity theft and bank fraud scheme in which he once tried to siphon $440,000 from one victim's account.

After a first attempt to kill the informant via hitman for $10,000 was unsuccessful, the U.S. Attorney's Office states that Valkovich doubled down:

“Valkovich approached another individual and asked him to kill both the original informant and the individual Valkovich had approached regarding the original murder scheme,” states the office. “Valkovich promised this man $40,000 in exchange for killing both men and provided information on the planned victims' appearance, residences, and cars. Valkovich directed that one victim be shot and have his head cut off.”

During sentencing U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson told the defendant, “You're your own worst enemy.”
