When the University of Southern California (USC) begins its 2022 spring semester on January 10, it will through remote online courses due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles.

As of this writing, USC plans to continue its in-person courses on January 18, but its residence halls will be open starting January 6.

The university will also continue its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for all students, faculty and staff, adding a booster requirement for those students who are eligible to receive it.

“We continue to closely monitor the spread of cases in our community, as well as the situation at other institutions,” USC wrote in a letter to students. “Fall was a success at USC, and we remain committed to keeping our campuses safe and continuing in-person instruction this spring.”

The USC online learning announcement came after several UC campuses announced it would do the same due to COVID-19, including UCLA and UC Irivine. The UC schools will be operating remotely for two weeks as opposed to USC’s one week.

In early November, the USC football program was affected by a COVID-19 outbreak on its rival team from Cal Berkeley. The November 14 game was postponed until December 4, where the Trojans lost 24-14 in its final game of the season, and missing its chance at playing in an en-of-year bowl game.
