Kooky things often have a way of happening in West Hollywood — Lindsay Lohan, for example, starts a ruckus in some bar or button-downed Republicans create a scandal by partying at a kinky nightclub — but the recent dognapping of a Chihuahua now ranks high on the list of supreme kookiness.

WeHo News reports that a man and woman approached another woman on the 800 block of Larrabee Street in West Hollywood near Santa Monica Boulevard on May 2. The two suspects then incapacitated the woman for a few moments and allegedly stole her pet Chihuahua.

The dognappers fled the scene and the woman went to the hospital with injuries. She also filed a report with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

After the victim returned home, one of the dognappers contacted her and allegedly demanded a $500 ransom.

The victim called the sheriff's department shortly after that incident at 1:30 a.m., and deputies eventually arrested both suspects.

According to WeHo News, the suspects — Jonathan Matta, 42, of West Hollywood and Meaghan Mahoney, 37, of Los Angeles — were booked for false imprisonment and robbery. Matta was also charged for possessing a controlled substance.

The dog, whose name has not yet been revealed, was apparently unharmed and returned to the owner.

No word if the movie rights for this story have been sold yet.

(Update: According to recent news reports, the Chihuahua's name is “Baby.”)
